Microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy) is a minimally invasive treatment used to rejuvenate the skin. Though the name might make this procedure sound intimidating, it might be helpful to think of this treatment as a more effective way to do a facial. We use a device that is laden with fine needles that create tiny punctures on the top layer of your skin, allowing us to penetrate deeper, triggering your skin to create new collagen and elastin. Where a facial will leave your skin glowing and radiant for a few days or a week, microneedling will leave your skin smoother longer.
The process works to kick-start your body’s own natural collagen production, which allows it to heal on its own. If you’re still not convinced, here is a list of everything you need to know about this amazing procedure!
What Is It?
Microneedling is a treatment that uses a tool with 11 tiny needles in its tip. These needles can be adjusted for optimal penetration, depending on your specific needs. The pain-free procedure can be thought of most simply as a collagen induction—or collagen induction therapy. This means it teaches your body to heal itself. The micro-punctures in your skin triggers your body to send fibroblasts to create more collagen in the affected area, essentially attempting to heal itself. While your body isn’t actually wounded, the body races to defend itself, thus thickening the skin and improving the texture with this procedure.
What is the procedure?
The microneedling treatment begins by first cleansing the face before adding a simple growth factor serum. Dr Usmani will then needle the serum in and add another layer before applying a mask over the top to seal everything in. It is important to know that this is not the same procedure as a “vampire facial,” which was made famous by Kim Kardashian. With the Vampire Facial we use growth factor from your own blood, and is recommended for very advanced signs of aging.
Who Should Do It?
Microneedling is a terrific treatment for acne scarring. It is safe for all skin colors and types, and is ideal for helping patients to grow thicker, healthier skin. We highly recommend microneedling for smoothing out the skin as it generates healthy skin cells and can assist in removing small bumps from clogged pores.
Does It Hurt?
Every patient’s tolerance is different. Generally speaking, microneedling shouldn’t hurt. However, we will numb the area first to be doubly sure there is no pain.
