10 Tips from Dr Usmani to Get Your Skin Looking Better than Ever in 2018

The new year brings many life goals and resolutions. Many of us choose an array of healthy lifestyle goals, and skin care health is no different. The new year is a terrific time to better yourself, and what better way than putting your best face forward, literally! To help you get started, here are 10 quick tips from board certified dermatologist, Dr Andleeb Usmani. Here’s to a happy & healthy 2019!

  1. Apply sunscreen every day before you go outdoors. As a Florida-based dermatologist, I can’t recommend a daily application sunscreen enough. While we can’t see the immediate effects of sun damage, it always catches up with us. Eventually, we begin to see brown spots, increased wrinkle lines, and potentially, early stages of skin cancer. We recommend looking for a sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection, SPF 30 (or higher), and is also water resistance.   2. Use downtime to do an at home skin treatment. This is a fun one! If you’re not in the habit of doing at home skin treatments, its time you start! We spend plenty of time on the computer or watching TV. Why not use that time to also do a skin care treatment? Pick up a face mask, or wash and moisturize your face during downtime.   3. Hydrate your skin from the inside out—and outside in. You might be asking yourself ‘how do I do that?’ The answer is simple: drink more water and moisturize. Water has so many healing properties. The more hydrated we are, the less dry our skin and here’s the kicker – fewer wrinkles. Despite what you hear all the time, the amount of water you drink daily doesn’t translate into proper skin hydration. It’s vital to hydrate your skin from the outside in with serums, creams, and hydrating mists. For added water drinking benefits, consider adding fruit!   4. Use skin care products that match your skin’s needs. We cannot stress this enough. So many patients we see for the first time find out that they have been using completely wrong products for their skin type. It’s important to not only know the basics (skin type ranges from oily, dry, normal, combination and sensitive), but also more complicated facts about your skin. For instance, do you have a skin condition? Using products formulated for your skin’s needs will help your skin look and feel its best.
  5. Wash your face when waking, before bed, and after sweating. Most of us wash our face once a day, at best. Far too often, women fall asleep with make-up still on, or simply forget to wash our face if we didn’t wear make-up during the day. With or without make-up, it is always of the utmost importance to wash your face! Washing when you wake up removes the dirt and bacteria that settle on your face while sleeping. Before bed, you want to remove makeup and grime, such as smog, smoke, or dirt, which may have landed on your skin.
  6. See a dermatologist if you dislike something about your skin. Only a dermatologist can and should diagnose and treat the thousands of different skin diseases we suffer from. We have the training and expertise needed to help people safely rejuvenate and care for their skin. If you’re unhappy with something about your skin, the first step is to seek out professional advice. Not only could you do damage to your skin by not going to a trained dermatologist, but you risk wasting a lot of money on the wrong product by purchasing over-the-counters without proper advice.
  7. Don’t ever rub your eyes. This is a major no-no and something we should all shake the habit of right now. The skin surrounding our eyes is most delicate. Removing make-up should only be done gently with make-up remover. Apply a thin layer of gel or eye moisturizer afterwards to help replace any lost or damaged skin cells.
  8. Let your lips guide your skin care routine. This is a great guideline to follow. Tip from Dr Usmani: your lips always feel dry first. If you notice your lips are dry, it’s time for hydration and moisture.
  9. Invest in a Great Moisturizer. Here’s the thing about moisturizers: they help our skin barrier by providing lipids, protecting from external chemicals, and providing water to our sometimes-parched skin. While we highly recommend using a dermatologist approved face wash, cleanser, toner, and moisturizer, we understand that not everyone can justify the cost.   10. Eat Well. This might not seem like it makes sense at first, but truthfully, everything you eat ends up on your skin. Greasy foods will lead to oily skin, foods high in vitamins will make your skin appear healthier, foods with a base high in water will hydrate your skin, and so on.
