If you’re not happy with shaving, tweezing, or waxing to remove unwanted hair, laser hair removal (LHR) may be an excellent solution that’s worth considering. A fairly common procedure, laser hair removal works by beaming highly concentrated light into your hair follicles. Pigment in the follicles absorb the light and destroy the hair.

We have seen a lot of success with laser hair removal for patients looking to remove hair on the face, leg, arm, underarm, bikini line, and other areas. This procedure is great because we are able to be precise when targeting a specific area, lasers can also selectively target dark, coarse hairs while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged. If you’re considering laser hair removal for the first time, here are 10 helpful tips before you get started!

  1. You will need a skin patch test before your first session:

At TruDerm, we will schedule an initial consultation with you before starting your laser hair removal treatment. During the consultation, our experts will explain the procedure and do a test patch on your skin. Unfortunately, not everyone is a good candidate for laser hair removal, and we want to make sure you’re getting what you are paying for. Typically, darker hair follicles are easier to treat because the laser targets the hair’s pigment. Gray, white, blonde, and red pigments can be tricky, but not impossible.

  1. There is prep work for laser hair removal:

We typically suggest that patients come in once a month for about six months for their laser hair removal treatments. While undergoing the procedure, you cannot wax or pluck the areas being treated. We strongly suggest only shaving the target area(s) for a few weeks before your first session. Our laser targets the hairs’ roots, which are temporarily removed by waxing or plucking, so this is very important.

  1. You may experience slight discomfort during the procedure.

Most people aren’t bothered much by the slight discomfort during a laser hair removal session, though many people describe the sensation as having a slight sting (sort of like a rubber band snapping against the skin). Fortunately, we can dial the strength of the laser up or down according to your sensitivity to the treatment.

  1. Your appointment can take anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour.

Depending on the area you’re having treated, the laser hair removal procedure cake take anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour. Underarms, lip and bikini lines tend to be quick treatments. If you’re targeting larger areas, please plan to be with us longer.

  1. After the procedure you should avoid the sun.

Following the procedure (and between appointments) you should avoid sun exposure as makes laser hair removal less effective and makes complications after treatment more likely.

  1. You are likely to see redness for a short period following each scheduled procedure.

Most patients skin will be slightly red following the procedure. The redness fades fairly quickly, but it is important to know this, particularly if you plan to schedule a procedure during the work day and have meetings to attend.

  1. Do not wax or pluck after your treatment.

Pulling out hair follicles after your laser hair removal treatment hinders the process. Your unwanted hair needs to fall out on its own in order to see the best results.

  1. Laser hair removal doesn’t automatically make you silky smooth after your first treatment.

Typically, it will take between five to six sessions of laser hair removal in order to see phenomenal results.
